Luxury Cars Offer Some of the Best Values in 2014

June 30th, 2014 by

For the third consecutive year, Acura has earned the Best Retained Value Brand Award from Edmunds.com for producing the vehicles with the highest projected residual value after five years.* What does it mean for a vehicle to have high residual value and why does that make it a great investment? We’re glad you asked.

What Does a High Residual Value Mean?

Residual value is a statistic that is calculated based upon the auto market, the construction and features of the vehicle in question, and the previous reliability of both the brand and the vehicle. Experts determine these ratings to give drivers an idea of just how well they are investing their money, and a high residual value is indicative of a better investment than a vehicle with a low residual value.

Why Residual Value Matters

When you are investing in a new car—and that’s what it is, investing—you want to make sure you get your money’s worth. While the old story of a vehicle losing all of its value when you drive it off the lot is not quite true, it does lose some of its value right then, and the rest decreases over time.

That’s why it’s important to look for automakers that have good residual value ratings on their vehicles. If you bought a brand new 2014 Acura MDX, for instance, you would want to make sure that it was a model with a satisfying residual value rating to be sure you were investing your money well. Even if you don’t plan on ever selling your car, it’s still a good sign of construction quality.
