Chicagoland drivers have practically every brand of luxury car available to them, but if you’re looking for a new luxury sport sedan, there are likely only a few options worth considering. If the 2015 Cadillac ATS is on your list, check its residual value; when we compared the 2015 Cadillac ATS 2.5L RWD to our 2015 Acura TLX 8-Spd DCT, we found the Acura to be a better investment for our drivers.

But before we get into the residual value comparison, what even is “residual value” and why does it matter?

Why Residual Value Matters

The old saying that a vehicle loses half its value when you drive it off of the lot is something of a myth, but it is true that a vehicle starts depreciating immediately after you take ownership. The residual value is the amount of the initial purchase price that remains after a given amount of time, expressed as a percentage of the initial price.

The higher a vehicle’s residual value, the better it retains its value over time, letting the buyer receive a decent return on the investment if they decide to sell later on. Companies like ALG calculate estimated residual values based on specs and the reputation of the vehicle to give drivers an idea of how new vehicles compare on future residual value.

Compare the ATS and TLX

Both of these sport sedans have quite a bit in common, but if you look at the specs and the fuel economy, it’s easy to see an edge for Acura. And we think that helps to explain the difference in residual value:

  • The 2015 Cadillac ATS 2.5L RWD residual value comes in at 43% at 36 months, with ALG predicting a 60-month value of just 31%.
  • The 2015 Acura TLX 8-Spd DCT has an ALG residual value of 48 % at 36 months and 36% at 60 months.

We could list all of the features and specs that set these two vehicles apart, but we think the best way for you to see what makes the 2015 Acura TLX such a remarkable vehicle is to get behind the wheel.
